Spirit Squad in the 1970's:
The 'Spirit Squad' of the 1970's was a pivotal point in its history. It was the beginning of establishing traditions for the team to maintain for year's to come. A signature image of this team is the standing on milk cans with uniforms made from Levi Strauss material donated from Levi's. The team copied the patterns from years before and handed down the look from year to year. They were unique, for sure!
There were only 4 Song Girls in 1976-77, the football stadium was the original stadium with little seating, while the basketball games were held in the original small gym. The team stood on milk cans for football and sat on denim embroidered pillows for basketball. The denim uniforms (which were the mini-skirted, overall look) had matching denim jackets they wore between songs. The dance pants were dark blue with each girls name on the butt. Cute, huh?! Accessorized with navy gloves and yellow blouses and matching socks.
The team spent most of the time practicing the dances with the Cal Aggie Band-uh!, a spirited little bunch! One needed to have a huge sense of humor and a fun spirit to hang with this group. The team had a lot of laughs, especially on trips to Humboldt and Oregon. Sleeping on the floor of a gym or cramming 10 people into a cheap hotel room was a common occurrence for these football and basketball games.
This group of Yell Leaders and Song Girls performed to Band-uh!'s music as well as performed the traditional Bosie-Cow-Cow. Other songs included was the theme song to Hawaii 5-O, White Rabbit, Man of La Mancha, Stepping Stone, One Fine Morning, Love Potion #9, Blue Suede Shoes, Lil Darlin, Joan, Merry Melodies, May 7, Stripper, Drinking Song and Cameleon.
