Spirit Squad of the 1990's:

The Spirit Squad of the 1990's was one of the most cohesive groups in the team's history. Made up of an awesome group of individuals, both the Stunt and Dance Teams went to camp together, traveled to games together and became great friends as a result. Does anyone remember the long line of stunt roll-offs? T-roll downs, back arches, torches and chairs? Woo Hoo! How about the T-BIRDS?

"T-birds for breakfast, T-birds for lunch, T-birds for dinner, munch, munch, munch!" 

Most notably, was the Stunt Team of 1991-1992 and the Dance Team of 1994-1995. These were the teams that "turned the corner," in terms of skill and talent. In part, this was due to the redefinition of the sort of athlete it took to be on the Stunt Team and the Dance Team. For example, the dancer's were able to redefine themselves as "dancers" by attracting new members who had studio training, thus, making the transition from a 'Pom Squad' to a 'Dance Team.'  

In 1996, this tremendous show of commitment helped save the squad. SPAC was faced with budget cuts and funding for the spirit squad program was at risk. Kristin Farlow '97 and Kerry Smith worked with Associate Athletic Director Larry Swanson to secure the spirit squad's future and the following summer, UC Davis Athletics began managing and supporting Spirit Squad.

One major event occurring in 1992 was the passing of Lane Bridger in a boating accident, shortly after auditions.  It was a difficult time for the squad, but his memory is still honored today with the Lane Bridger Award, which is given out annually to two outstanding members of the Cheer Team.
